How should a Muslim in a non-Muslim country act with respect to the purity of a prospective house they wish to live in, whether renting or buying, which may have furniture that was used by people before them and it is not known whether they are People of the Book like Jews and Christians or others like Buddhists or even atheists?

They should consider the house to be pure (tahir) as long as they do not know or are not certain that it has become impure, and mere suspicion of it being impure does not have any significance.

Believers often encounter difficulty in getting enough water to purify themselves beyond the urinary orifice when using public restrooms where faucet water is not available [near the toilet]. Thus, for example, is it permissible to purify oneself from feces by wiping with toilet paper?

The urinary orifice must be washed with water once in order to purify it, and should be washed twice, or even three, times as a recommended precaution. As for the fecal orifice, it can be purified by wiping it once with any object (such as a cloth, tissue paper, or something similar) that will remove the impurity, provided the impurity does not spread beyond the orifice. If the impurity spreads to other parts of the body (i.e., surrounding the orifice) then water must be used to purify.

Rental apartments (for residing, while traveling, etc.) are sometimes equipped with household furniture and appliances such as refrigerators, mattresses, utensils, and so on. What is the ruling of ritual purity when it comes to these items, especially when we know that the previous tenant or guest in most cases is not a Muslim, such as someone from the people of the book, a Buddhist, a Hindu, or even someone without a religion, who does not believe in the existence of God, prophets, and messengers?

They should consider everything pure as long as they do not know for certain, or have contentment, that the item has become mutanajjis (i.e., ritually impure due to contact). Strong presumption (dhan) of the ritual impurity of something should be disregarded.

Does the hand of a Muslim become impure (mutanajjis) if it touches the wet hand of a Christian or a Hindu?

The hand of a Muslim does not become impure if it touches the hand of someone from the people of the book (i.e., Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians) unless the Muslim knows, even if previously, that their hand has acquired some impurity that can be transferred. As for anyone other than the people of the book (e.g., Hindus, Sikh, others), touching their hands with wetness causes a Muslims hand to become impure (mutanajjis) based on obligatory precaution.

The coronavirus is spreading rapidly and people are using hand sanitizers to clean their hands from germs. These hand sanitizers, at least the ones recommended by the World Health Organization and the US Center for Disease Control, contain 60% or more of ethanol (ethyl alcohol) in them as the main active ingredient for killing germs and viruses. Is it permissible for us to use these hand sanitizers, and can we consider our hands to be clean and not impure or najis after using them?

Ethanol alcohol is considered pure, hence there is no problem in using it as a sanitizer.

1) Is it our responsibility to call the customer service to find out if shoes made in non-Muslim countries are made out of 100% real leather, artificial leather, or a combination of both and other materials (i.e., for the purposes of purity)?
2) If I know the shoes are made out of 100% real leather, would that be najis? If yes, then what is the process to keep our body pure when we touch it with dry hands and with wet hands? What if it is made out of real and artificial leather and other materials, would that be najis?

1) If you are not sure whether the dress shoes are made out of natural leather or not, you can treat them as pure, and you do not have to investigate.

2) If the shoes are made out of natural leather or a mix of natural and artificial parts, and there is no reasonable probability that it is from an animal slaughtered according to Islamic laws, then you must treat it as impure (najis). However, it will not make other things, like your skin, impure unless there is contact with moisture, and when in doubt, you do not need to check.

Can water itself be counted as a mutanajjis? For example, my nail was bleeding, and some water got under the nail and then trickled onto the back of my hand. Thus, will the water that touched the blood be first mutanajjis and then the back of my hand where the water touched second mutanajjis?

The criterion for considering something a first mutanajjis is that it came into contact with the najasah directly. Therefore, in the example you mentioned, the water that came into contact with the blood under your nail is the first mutanajjis. As for the back of your hand, if the water that came into contact with it has not itself contacted a najasah, it is pure. However, if the water came into contact with a najasah, like the blood under the nail (as above), the back of your hand would then be a second mutanajjis.

If the toilet is connected to a large amount of water (kur, which is at least 380 liters) and the water that splashes do not have the color or smell of the feces, there is no problem and you do not have to wash your thighs. However, if it is not connected to kur, then you must wash your thighs with water at least once.
